Creator’s Truth

Two weeks ago, we noted that the historical certainty of the resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth turned first century pagans into God worshipers and God servants. In the same way, the resurrection of Jesus continues to captivate pagan hearts in the present.

If so, then a key thing happens. Through Messiah’s birth, death, resurrection and ascension Yahweh is restored to His rightful throne in the believing human heart. Thus, believers begin the process of looking at everything through a different lens — the lens of truth with a capital T. And that Truth proceeds from Creator Yahweh Himself. For, if this universe is created, then there is simply no other truth than that which comes from its Creator. We can make up our own truths, which is what we sinners do. But ultimately, all such “truths” are nonsense. And this week we have an interesting example of human truth that has become nonsense. But first, let’s set the stage.

Two weeks ago we looked at Psalm 19 which begins Psalm 19:1-4, “1 The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands. 2 Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. 3 There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. 4 Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.” In other words, the universe itself proclaims the glory of its Creator. To Psalm 19, we can add Genesis 1:1, “In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.” And Isaiah 44:24, “Thus says the LORD, your Redeemer, who formed you from the womb: ‘I am the LORD, who made all things, who alone stretched out the heavens, who spread out the earth by myself.’” Did you get the part about Yahweh stretching out the heavens?

There’s a technical term for theories of where everything has come from. They’re called theories of origins. Since the early twentieth century one theory of origins has dominated the landscape. It goes by the pop name, “Big Bang.”

Have you ever been at a railroad crossing with a train blowing its horn as it approaches and then goes past the crossing? Have you ever noticed that as the train starts to move away from you, the pitch of the horn lowers? This is called the Doppler effect. In the early 20th century we finally developed telescopes powerful enough to look into the far reaches of space. When light from the most distant galaxies was examined, there appeared to be a Doppler effect in the light spectrum.

Light spectrum refers to passing white light through a prism so that it divides up into its visible rainbow colors: red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple. The modern telescopes revealed that in the light from distant galaxies, the place in the spectrum where the light signatures of individual elements should appear, like iron or oxygen, was shifted toward the red side of the spectrum. And the more distant the galaxy appeared, the greater was the red shift. Therefore, it was concluded that the red shift is a Doppler effect caused by galaxies that are moving away from us at tremendous speed. And since the distant galaxies in every direction we looked were red shifted, it was concluded that there must have been a tremendous explosion that started all the matter in the universe moving away from us. Thus, the “Big Bang.”

Another part of the theory is that because of the speed of light, the light just reaching us now from distant galaxies must be very ancient. Therefore, what we actually see in our telescopes is not galaxies as they currently exist, but supposedly as they existed at the very beginning of the universe.

Secular scientists have formed a theory of how galaxies form. Our own Milky Way has spiral arms around a central disk. It’s been concluded, therefore, that the Milky Way represents the most mature form of galaxy. Now, since the light coming from the most distant galaxies is assumed to be very ancient, it was expected that these galaxies would only exhibit much more primitive features of galaxy formation.

Into this scenario enter the new James Webb Telescope, which was launched into outer space in 2021 and went into operation in January of 2022. This telescope is more powerful than anything we’ve previously had. It enables us to see distant things much more clearly than ever before. What it’s found contradicts the “Big Bang” theory to its roots. There are very distant spiral arm galaxies just like Milky Way. What does this mean?

Here’s where we get into the argument about truth. For Christians, real Truth is what our Creator has revealed about Himself and His actions in history. That’s found in the Bible. Therefore, when Scripture says that Yahweh stretched out the heavens all at one time at the beginning, our observations should confirm that information. If Scripture says Noah’s flood happened, our observations should confirm that information. If Scripture says Yahweh created each specie of living thing according to its kind, again, our observations should confirm that information.

Did you know that there are scientists that use Scripture as their theoretical framework for doing science? In fact, at the beginning of science, all scientists used Scripture as their framework. But then came the resurgence of paganism and the desire to do science from the viewpoint that there is no Creator God. And so the universe itself was substituted as an uncreated, eternal, infinite and self-existing Creator God. In the late 1800’s and early 1900’s this pagan theory of origins won the allegiance of powerful people in the universities. It, therefore, became impossible for any scientist worthy of the name to do science without believing in a pagan universe.

But, did you know that for many decades now, there are scientists that still insist that the universe and everything in it can be best explained through a Creator God? I didn’t know that until 1986. Indeed, prior to that time, my training in pagan science would have led me to mock anyone who did science according to such an “unscientific” book as the Bible. See how my schooling in paganism overrode Christian doctrine. But that’s another story.

There are various private organizations dedicated to doing science according to the Biblical model. They’re all privately funded, since government dollars go to what are supposedly non-religious (so-called secular) organizations doing science. In reality such secular organizations are very much religious. Their theory of origins is very similar to the Hindu world view — that the universe itself is God. But again, that’s another story.

Answers In Genesis is one of the private scientific organizations. On their YouTube news channel they featured this story on May 6th.

Dr. Jason Lyell — a Christian astrophysicist and founder of Biblical Science Institute — successfully made a number of predictions before the data from the James Webb Telescope started coming in. First, he predicted that the telescope would find far distant, high red-shift galaxies with spiral arms like the Milky Way. He predicted that contrary to the “Big Bang” theory, it would find massive highly structured galaxies fully formed, and not in the process of assembly. Dr. Lyell predicted that this finding would force secular astrophysicists to conclude that these galaxies had formed much earlier than their theoretical models had predicted. This is precisely what happened. It was recently announced that based on the James Webb findings, secular astronomers have doubled the age of the universe from 13 to 26 billion years.

Dr. Lyell also predicted that signatures of elements heavier than Lithium, like Oxygen, would be found in the light spectrum of the most distant galaxies. According to the “Big Bang” theory such elements should not be found, because the stars of these supposedly immature galaxies would not have had enough time to produce the heavier elements via nuclear fusion. Nevertheless, the James Webb telescope found many elements heavier than Lithium in the supposedly ancient light.

So notice. The predictions of the secular Bing Bang model have failed. On the other hand, a creation scientist using a Biblical model successfully predicted what the telescope is actually finding. Models that make successful predictions are very important in science.

Dr. Lyell made one more prediction ahead of the Webb telescope launch. He said, “I predict that the secular community as a whole will not be moved by the amazing results from the James Webb Telescope. Despite all evidence to the contrary, they will continue to believe in a ‘Big Bang’ and that stars and galaxies spontaneously formed over millions of years.” He said, “this confirms that the ‘Big Bang’ is not really science at all, but a philosophical pre-commitment, in light of which secularists interpret all of the data.”

The idea that there is a Creator God who stretched forth the heavens all at one time is also a philosophical pre-commitment. But which model is more successful at predicting what has actually been found?

And, is one model somehow scientific and the other religious? No. If anything, both are religious theories of origins. The only question is which one is doing the best job of predicting what we actually find? What is the Truth?

When first century pagans believed the resurrection of Messiah Jesus, they abandoned the pagan narratives of creation and adopted the Jewish narrative. This absolutely altered their worldview. No longer did they believe in an uncreated universe somehow capable of spontaneous creation. Instead, they believed in the uncreated Creator God, Yahweh, and His Son, Jesus.

Along with the Jewish narrative of Creation, the converted pagans also adopted the Jewish narrative of human history and life itself. They also adopted the moral commandments found in Jewish law as well as the principles of virtuous living expounded by Jesus and His apostles. Thus, what we know as the Christian life began to be lived through the working of Lord Holy Spirit in hearts eager to hear God’s Word. Certainly it was not all glory. The problems mentioned in the Apostle’s letters tell us that. But it was a massive sea change from the pagan culture.

In our time, rebellion against Christian culture and the Christian life was already coming. But Boomers were the first generation to rebel in a big way. Therefore, no one should be amazed at what has happened. Just read Romans 1:18-32. Boomers didn’t initiate the slide back into paganism, but certainly gave it the mighty shove that subsequent generations have accelerated.

Nevertheless, the Day of Pentecost 33A.D. has happened. Despite the treachery of many, the reign of Jesus Christ through His true Church will continue until the Day of His coming. It’s just that the path of the true Church will become more dangerous and more hated in those lands where Christian culture is evaporating.

Those in rebellion hate their Creator. That’s the mark of Original Sin. For like Satan himself, we are all born with a fierce desire to be our own gods and make our own universe. Only the mercy of our Creator through His Son, Messiah Jesus, can save us from the eternal fate of all those who pursue this course until their deaths.

Just mark the Hitler’s, Stalin’s and Mao Tse Tung’s of this world — those who rose to the supreme pinnacle of being their own gods. Look at what their God-playing did in this world. That and much worse will be the fate of all denied entry into the Kingdom of God. For in hell — the place of total rebellion — the fierce desires of Original Sin will be set free from the restraining power of Yahweh’s righteousness that is present on this earth. In hell, Original Sin will be set free to accomplish unimaginable evil through those whom it totally possesses — namely every eternally banished person who refused the mercy of Yahweh in this life.

As we’ve said many times: beware. This life is not the main event in life. Therefore, where will each of us spend life’s eternal main event, and in what condition? Through Jesus, each person on earth has been offered the life we were created for — an eternal life of righteousness and goodness equal to the righteousness of our Creator.  We will have righteousness equal to our Creator because it will be His righteousness that is in us.

In the meantime everyone here is in the cross hairs where Original Sin and the Righteousness of our Savior, Messiah Jesus, cross. On Mother’s Day we honor the women among us who have given birth. So, let us consider the situation confronting the potential mothers of America caught in the cross hairs.

Throughout history men have been free to indulge the god-playing of their sinful nature by serially seducing women. Historically this has not been true of women because the responsibility of pregnancy and birth is theirs. But, the pill, feminism and focus on inner, sinful spirituality has changed history. On social media we now have young women bragging about how many men they have seduced — 138, or 5 already in a day. The newly esteemed ancient pagan gods and goddesses of bacchanal and sensuality have pulled too many young women into deeper rebellion.

The good news is that the mercy of Yahweh still stands. Every repentant hoe can be washed clean. It was so in Jesus’ time. Indeed, He was accused of being a friend of prostitutes and tax collectors. Jesus once told the Pharisees in Matthew 21:31-32, “32. . . ‘Truly, I say to you, the tax collectors and the prostitutes go into the kingdom of God before you. 32 For John [the Baptist] came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him, but the tax collectors and the prostitutes believed him. And even when you saw it, you did not afterward change your minds and believe him.’” Glory to the living God for the Mercy that overcomes and redeems stubborn, rebellious hearts.

Now, in the present situation all repentant, true believers are left in a great struggle. On the one hand, we’re already declared righteous before God through the forgiveness of sins. For where sin is forgiven, only the righteousness of Christ remains. But on the other, the leech of Original Sin has not yet been removed from us. We’re still forced to play God.

Almost thirty years ago the grace of God stole Presbyterian pastor’s wife and Christian author, Dr. Rosario Butterfield, from a life dedicated to homosexual rebellion against her Creator. She says she once did everything in her power as a respected college professor to define homosexuality as wholesome and normal for society.

But, speaking of her former life, Dr. Butterfield said in a recent lecture, “The fact that you did not choose the sin of your flesh does not make it someone else’s responsibility. Sin doesn’t make you a victim. You make yourself a victim by not driving a fresh nail into your choice sin every day or a thousand times a day, and fighting your sin until it’s dead.”

This conforms to what St. Paul wrote in Romans 8:12-14, “12 Therefore, brothers, we have an obligation — but it is not to the sinful nature, to live according to it. 13 For if you live according to the sinful nature, you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live, 14 because those who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God.” (NIV)

The good news is that there are young women out there who are eager to daily drive Christ’s nails into their heart of sin and live the Christian life. Some of them are on the internet speaking and teaching of their efforts to be the wife and mother Yahweh appointed them to be — supporting the young Christian men they have married.

They’re digging into Scriptures like this from 1Peter 3:1-7, “1. . . wives, be subject to your own husbands, so that even if some do not obey the word, they may be won without a word by the conduct of their wives, 2 when they see your respectful and pure conduct. 3 Do not let your adorning be external — the braiding of hair and the putting on of gold jewelry, or the clothing you wear — 4 but let your adorning be the hidden person of the heart with the imperishable beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which in God’s sight is very precious. 5 For this is how the holy women who hoped in God used to adorn themselves, by submitting to their own husbands, 6 as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord. And you are her children, if you do good and do not fear anything that is frightening. 7 Likewise, husbands, live with your wives in an understanding way, showing honor to the woman as the weaker vessel, since they are heirs with you of the grace of life, so that your prayers may not be hindered.”

Now, that’s a slap in the face of feminism. But who’s writing here — some nobody? This is an Apostle — qualified to speak for the God who stretched forth the heavens. So, as in all things, our sinful nature is faced with a great challenge from our Creator God. Will we have His righteousness or some imagined righteousness of our own? The news is that there are young women out there publicly willing to embrace Apostolic teaching instead of pagan teaching.

Therefore, wives, husbands, this is the challenge before us. The crucified one supplies us with the nails to the heart that make the Christian life possible. He gives us His Holy Spirit. This same grace of life is what we are to share with our children and descendants.

Today, because of Mother’s Day, our focus has been on those with the holy calling to be wives, husbands and parents. As for you single people, your holy callings before the Lord are different. To fulfill them, you also require nails to the heart, but in different ways. Nevertheless, the grace of the crucified, risen and ascended Messiah given in Word and Sacrament is for all. Therefore, let us partake. Come, Holy Spirit. Amen.
